Thanks for the picture and information. The "arch" part is basically what I am looking for as the flat panels can be fabricated from sheet metal. Good to know that the E28 piece will fit.

Maybe check all the vacuum hoses. i think these motors are sensitive to vacuum leaks. Could be a tear in the rubber or a leak that is not visible. Even if the dip stick is not pushed all the way in it can create a vacuum leak.

JB Weld has a similar epoxy thread kit that might not be as expensive. It worked well on a small stripped bolt hole on a brake caliper on my TR3. the kit should be an OK repair for a valve cover but I would not use it on a critical bolt.

I think your right. Just by looking at the pictures it appears to me that the rear E12 bumper would fit but the front sides of the E12 bumper would be too long for the Bavaria.

I think your right. Seeing as how he already replaced the ECU and the alternator and the fuel pump is working I bet the car would fire right up if he replaced the Combo relay. Seems like his mechanic is not familiar with E12's!

That's unfortunate as the Bavaria I was thinking about is a 74. A potential swap would have been a lot less hassle in terms of wiring had it been a 75/76 but I suppose it is still doable but a lot more work.

So on a "74" Bavaria would have had the Zenith carbs and not the L jet and a 75/76 would have had the ECUs and electronics similar to a 530i in them?

Thanks for the info. I know where there is a Bavaria that has a cracked block but the bodywork and paint has been done. A possible candidate for my wrecked 530i parts. So L jet may have been fitted to some versions of E3?

Would a 76 530i motor and Getrag 5 speed fit into a 1974 Bavaria or would there not be enough room for the M30 motor?

I would be interested to see how that fits. Is there any chance of you posting some pictures of how you cut out and fitted the panel?
