Re: A/C Compressor Upgrade
Gents - My AC blows cool-ish, let's say "tepid" - definitely something going on, but not cold. The Haynes manual is really sparse on the AC - a basic diagram of the components and the admonition to get thee to a refrigeration engineer with any questions. So my first hope was that a simple...

Re: Car wont start w/ red and black wire connected ('80 528i)
Coil resistance sounds normal, that's about what mine has. Check the BK RD wire for a short circuit to ground. From what you're saying it sounds like somewhere along its length it's hitting negative, so when it's plugged in and you try and start the car, the power for the starter is going via that w...

Re: glove box latch
I ordered a new one a few months ago, they're cheap as I recall because I think that part is used in some other models too.
It's very hard plastic, I thought it was metal at first. There may be metal reinforcing within the plastic.

Re: Coolant Temp. sensor
I used Elring Dirko Grey Sealing +300°C, I believe it's the recommended stuff, and less is more. When I took the thermostat cover and timing case off, PO had used so much that it was difficult to pull apart, tore the gaskets (inc. the head gasket) and took forever to clean, let alone the pieces that...

Re: Coolant Temp. sensor
I got the new style bolt, I don't use anti-seize but I found it doesn't need to be done up very tight especially as it's seating to aluminum. I tighten mine to a little more than finger tight and it doesn't leak. Feels like it would break easy.

Re: A/C Compressor Upgrade
On a similar note, my system is still on R12 and has a slight leak at the reciever-dryer connection and needs a charge (about half filled right now). I'm going to fix the leak, and then was going to switch it over to R134a with a new generic parallel flow condenser from ebay - but then I found now t...

Easy timing chain change
In my never-ending quest to fix my poor idle, while the forum was down I changed my badly-worn camshaft sprocket to fix the slackness in the timing chain which I guessed was causing the shaky idle and exhaust 'burbling' as the cam timing jumps back and forth. To remove upper timing cover need to rem...

Yes just cut it as far forward as possible to leave the barb on, but far enough back that the hole will be large enough to flow the brake fluid to the clutch master cylinder. As long as the barb is there you can put the hose clamp on behind it to make a good seal. Don't worry I asked the same thing ...

What is the issue you're having, is it just that the clutch feed pipe is on an angle and not straight? Mine is a 79 and I have the same unit as you. Mine was an auto and when I converted to manual I just cut the end of it to feed the clutch, same unit for auto and manual. https://c2.staticflickr.com...

I took a video of the idle with a jug of windscreen fluid balanced on the manifold, seemed the best way to visually show the shake. https://flic.kr/p/Fjp2gu The metallic rattling sound is just the e34 dual mass flywheel that's a little worn but still serviceable. The bad idle emphasizes it though. B...

Thanks Mike, as our cars are so old I have no reference for what a normal idle is like. One thing forgot to mention is I found last weekend the distributor centrifugal advance wasn't really retracting, I oiled it up and now it does work - but it's messed up the timing now that it functions. Once I'v...

Thanks for your feedback. I had some time this weekend to run a bunch of tests, and this is what I found; Compression test returned about 160PSI on each cylinder cold with 6 cranks each time. Tells me both the top end and bottom end are good Spark is bright white/blue and can jump a far bigger gap t...

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it's mostly only annoying at this point because it has plenty of power and loves to rev especially into freeway onramps, just can't idle well and is embarrassing when I'm trying to show it to people because that and the bad paint make people think it's just some old junke...

For the coolant sensor, a little coolant would probably leak out - anything lower than the reserve tank is going to flow out so I'd swap them quickly, a bit but nothing major. Once it's reinstalled you have the air bleed screw next to it anyway so start the car up and bleed any air out. Not sure abo...
