Re: Squeak in Rear Suspension
I removed both rear shocks and replaced the mounts, rubbers and gaskets. Also inspected and lubricated the trailing arm mounts and swaybar mounts. Still squeaking with full force and vigor. What I noticed is that the squeak diminishes over the course of a drive. I'm suspecting broken spot welds behi...

Re: 1980-83 e21 320i, oxygen sensor question
The O2 sensor produces an electrical signal, so it has to be processed somehow. This article mentions a controller of some kind that modulates fuel pressure through a valve that appears to be especially for K-Jet with lambda control : http://cleanflametrap.com/kjetControlller.htm I don't know much a...

Re: Engine Ground - 1974 530i
There are probably lots of options, but I attached mine to one of the bolts holding the bracket for the throttle bellcrank on the block . It's easy to access. The other end I connected to the wheel house bracket that holds the coolant overflow tank (and the combo relay on my 81). Check for a good gr...

Re: L-jet fuel rail / injector rebuild questions
I just replaced my injectors and short hoses and used clamps on both ends (injector and rail). If you use the right size clamps, high quality fuel hose and tighten them correctly they will not make the hoses more likely to leak. The last thing you want is high pressure fuel spraying directly onto yo...

Re: Squeak in Rear Suspension
Thanks Lock. When I replaced the shocks last year I replaced the front mounts but cheaped out and reused the rear mounts. I've ordered new ones along with the rubber mountings for the shock rod. When I'm replacing the mounts I'll have a close look at everything, including the trailing arm bushing an...

Re: Squeak in Rear Suspension
The subframe rubber mounts are pricey, so I'm hoping they're OK. It could be trailing arm bushings, or the shock mounts. My understanding is that the bushings should create more of a creak/groan than a chirp/squeak. The shock mount seems to place the noise right at the rear seat. Any experiences wit...

Squeak in Rear Suspension
There is a long-lived squeak that I've always assumed was a rear seat issue, but after removing both parts of the rear couch it's evidently something different. The shoulder bracket for one of the rear seat belts was squeaky, but with that fixed there's another squeak that is originating from the re...

Wow. This is the stuff nightmares are made of. Kudos for your sleuthwork.
On all but the most routine maintenance tasks, I've taken to photographing everything before I touch it, and religiously consulting the pix when putting things back together. That would not have helped me here.

Re: LS swap
One reason BMW liked to mount the M30 far forward was so the weight would pin the nose of the car to the ground at high speed. Many cars get very light in the front end at high speed (over 100 mph). I had the hood off my E12 recently and at 80 mph the front end was getting noticeably lightfooted wi...

Re: M30B35 Swap
I've read of M70/73 V12 swaps into E34s and E39s, and even an E30, but never an E12. Do it Mike! I wouldn't want to do the plug changes, but it would look great!

Re: 1975 BMW 530i - Clunking Noise from Front Right
I replaced the stock sway bar with the ST one that required lowering the front subframe. It was the first upgrade I made to my E12 after I bought it. It was not complicated. With the car on jackstands (not under the subframe, obviously), simply back the two subframe bolts out to allow the subframe t...
