'80 528i Fuel Sender float wires

As many before me have discovered, the fuel gauges in these cars tend to get a little jumpy over time. I cleaned up the posts of the fuel gauge itself, and also pulled the sender out to check that. After playing with the sender, it was obvious the fault was with the sender unit. There are two wires ...

I heeded the advice, new hose, check valve but no grommet just yet. was hoping I can find one locally rather than spend $10 to have one shipped It’s tight but yes it pulls straight out. well, I got this thing out, pulling straight out. It d...

Re: Starter issues, continued....

I wish I had a final update, I do not. after buying and installing a new starter, I felt pretty good about it all, for about a day. After driving around for a bit and doing more work on the car, it would not start again. Played with it some, no success to make it start. I gave it a rest, say 10 minu...

Re: Brake Booster hose connection

I bookmarked that site right away.... I had been there before, but that will really help in the future. Got a camera in on the connection that I spoke of, which is #3 on the parts list. When looking close at the pic, I can tell the culprit is #2. I can see that its split as well as not seated proper...

Brake Booster hose connection

Its time to start tuning the '80 528i, but first things first, fix the vacuum leaks. Well, I can hear one very clearly after shutting off the car. Maybe you guessed it, but its the hose connection to the brake booster. It looks like an L-shaped check valve of sorts, I cannot find this part anywhere....

Re: Starter issues, continued....

Just an update After having some time off, I was able to pluck the existing starter that had a lifetime warranty and get it replaced Slapped the new replacement in, no issues at all, starts every time, no whirr, feels good. So yeah, starter solenoid was on its way out. Tested fine on the bench, but ...

Headlight Switch cleaning/rebuild FAQ?

I assume many go through the woes of the headlight switch either not making a connection when it should, or the dash light dimming not dimming as it should. I was having a problem with the dimming flickering. I knew it was a dirty connection, so I wanted to pull the switch out and blast it with some...

Re: Starter issues, continued....

Just for reference. Red wire, large post. Black wire, small post. Car starts, but starter sounds as if its still engaged until removing black wire from post Black wire, large post. Red wire, small post. Car starts, but runs like its very rich. Idles at an average 300rpm, but also jumps in rpm trying...

Re: Starter issues, continued....

Time to find the receipt for this starter I think. I purchased it less than a year ago. After all my jacking around and whatnot, sounds like its time time to find something better. I will definitely try to test this before pulling it, but I feel the starter being in a partially working state is just...

Starter issues, continued....

Ive been fighting a starting issue that I feel lies solely with the starter/solenoid itself. On the starter, theres a few posts, and a few male spade connectors. My focus is which wires are connected to which connector. It would be very helpful if someone could take a picture of those connections. I...

Re: Car wont start w/ red and black wire connected ('80 528i)

the starter is aftermarket, but I dont think it would have any odd connections. There are a few spade connectors on the positive side, I figured it probably didnt matter much as to which to connect to. Gave that a shot, and it did start right away, but still sounded like the started stays engaged to...

Re: Car wont start w/ red and black wire connected ('80 528i)

So I think I might know whats up here. The BK RD wire that connects to the Starter Solenoid, its connected to the ground section.... The wire is only long enough to connect to that section, as if its only supposed to connect there. But from what youve just said, It sounds like this one needs to be c...
