Re: Steering Box Adjustment Screw

Thanks Mike - I noticed that flange after I posted. Using a flat screwdriver bit on a ratchet and holding the collar nut with a box-end wrench, I was able to get it to move. Do you happen to know who can rebuild these steering boxes? Mine is way past prime. I was able to pick one up on eBay of unkow...

Steering Box Adjustment Screw

Can this be removed with the box still in the car? I've adjusted this before, or at least I thought I did. Right now, the retaining nut is stuck and I cannot turn the screw independently after loosening the retaining nut. Can this be backed out all the way so that I can soak the screw/nut out of the...

Re: Intake Bellows Replacement

If the bellows tube has any structural integrity, you may be able to repair it. I'm working on a drainage project in my yard, and 4-inch flexible drainage pipe is corrugated. Maybe this can keep things sealed well enough until you get your NOS bellows? https://www.homedepot.com/p/Prinsco-2-in-x-50-f...

Re: Steering lock kill switch?

I can remove my ignition key with the car running. This is evidently the result of wear, but does anyone know if this "feature" correlates to impending failure? It's handy for checking my mailbox at the end of the street without having to turn off the car to remove the key.

Re: 530i rear shock/strut assembly install?

Hey Karl, that is odd. My recollection is that the studs on the guide support are equally spaced around the circumference so orientation should not be an issue. The rubber dampers (if you have them) do have an orientation according to the blue book (tabs facing front and rear).

Re: Blade fuse upgrade

I was able to source ceramic bullets during the last few years, possibly from Walloth Nesch because they're shown at $1.69 each.

Lock, are the green LEDs on the Holy Grail board illuminated when the fuse is active? A handy feature, that.

Re: Electronic speedo

So with the factory Getrag 265/6 the speedo output will work in this arrangement?

Awesome project, Lock.

Re: Giubo

I was thinking about ways to move the knob backwards. Other than shortening the linkage, bending is really the only option (there is a bend in the shifter). What might make bending slightly laborious is that the outer aluminum trim turning is potted into place with silicone, but there are clearly se...

Re: 76 530i motor&5spd into a 74 Bavaria?

each half is balanced independently so no issues with balance. First off, great new avatar pic of your E12 in the snow. Interesting about the drive shaft halves. Everything I read about separating the halves stressed the importance of marking the orientation to preserve balance. I was pretty parano...

Re: 76 530i motor&5spd into a 74 Bavaria?

Karl, I don't think this will be a cheap solution to do safely. My 2 cents, fwiw - there are people that know way more than me, but these would be my concerns. Having just replaced the CSB and removing the D/S, I was surprised at the size of the balancing weights welded to the driveshaft. They weren...

Re: Giubo

Everything is back together. In the picture above, the shift linkage is not installed. If anyone in the future installs the Auto Solution short shifter, note that the linkage bar is beefier than stock, and it will be impossible to install after the console platform is bolted down. So fit everything ...

Here's where I am. https://i.ibb.co/QcmJsc7/Autosolutions.jpg The selector shaft seal on the Getrag 265 was a major job, and not for complexity. The old one took hours of patient picking to remove, and installing the new one required freezing the new seal overnight and heating the area around the se...

Re: Giubo

Thank you again, Mike. Today I made some major progress with the wife out of the house and the new QuickJacks giving me plenty of space. Yesterday I called Uncle and took the E12 to my repair shop to get the #$@%#$@ nuts off the exhaust flange studs. After a few hours of heating with MAP, penetratin...

Re: Giubo

I have a few worm-drive hose clamps that I could try at the same time. McMaster Carr has bolt clamps in a bunch of sizes that can take 75 ft-pounds at the bolt. I'm not sure how that translates to circumferential compression. What's your gut say?
