Can anyone identify these shocks and springs.

Post by honzecruze »

So I got these off of a 1979 528 that I bought for parts. the guy said that it had upgraded sport suspension and sway bar. I have never felt stock e12 suspension, but this felt pretty stiff for a street car. but it looks like its stock. It has the bmw color dots on it, and I was wondering if any of you guys know if their any thing special or just stock springs.

also the front sway bar is 23mm thick. is that stock?

The rears are KYB Gas Adjusts, which are a good shock IMO although some consider them too harsh. The fronts no telling, you'll have to remove the shocks from the strut housings, only thing I can say is they aren't Bilsteins. I would guess stock springs and sway bar although I don't have the dimensions at the moment.

Ya pretty sure those are stock springs and sway bar. I read some where that the m535 had a upgraded 25 mm sway so my 23 mm makes sense.

Thanks!

the shocks are basically as stock style so they are not performance. IF the springs are performance the easiest way to tell is if the front are loose when the assembly is remove from the car. sport/lowering springs will have a gap between the top spring perch when out of the car. If there is no gap then either the PO swindled you or was swindled him self. I agree that the fronts are not bilstines so they are not performance shocks either. FYI I run the KYB shocks on my e12 and love them but they are not performance.

Good luck

I don't like KYB shocks at all. To me it makes the car feel jittery. Bilstein HDs are far superior.
