e12, e28 Windshields NLA...

Post by philipj »

The factory windshields 51311848431, 51311820978 or 51311466362 for 5 series e12. and e28 are discontinued.

If anyone can help, I'm looking for a (Green shade) High quality equivalent. Thank you.

I've got my fingers crossed somebody replies with an easy source, otherwise the end might not only be near, but two years ago.

Seeing the sheet metal parts go NLA makes insuring my, "Drivers," pretty silly. Any major hits would require gonzo labor charges, world wide searches for junk parts. In short, a check from the insurance company determining what the, "Totaled," value is. The end. Parts car for sale.

I try not to think about it. Same as not thinking about parts for my old body being NLA.

I hope you're wrong cause I'm about to order one. RealOEM says they're available:

I checked with my guy at BMW of Sterling and he says they are in fact NLA even though RealOEM says yes. It could be a situation where the supplier produces in batches but there's no future availability date. He also checked other dealer inventory and came up goose eggs.

He did provide an aftermarket source and I just bought one to have in case of a future need.

Quoted me $150

With all the e12s and e28s worldwide, I find it hard to believe they're permanently discontinued but sometimes corporate decisions make little sense. I'll continue to check with the dealer.

I recently replaced mine because it was old and warped. It was ordered by the shop i take my car and it was not oem. but still nice, I don't see the difference.

is there a need for it to be BMW oem? Im sure you can find a 3rd party replacement.

I had the same problem with my Bronze tint E28 windshield. NLA from the factory. There is a company in Germany that reproduces them, but that really wasn't an option for me. http://www.classic-autoglas.com/
Then I lucked out and found someone local who had a good used one in bronze. It's not new, but it fits the "patina" of the car better anyway.

Wow. NLA....at least for now.

I had my windshield replaced in 2005. That glass is Sekurit. I've had
no issues with it. Furthermore, while at the local indep. BMW shop last week, I saw an E34 and its windshield was both Sekurit and had a Roundel on it. So, it seems Sekurit is or was an OEM supplier for BMW.
