Valve clearance again...want to get it right.

Post by canada karl »

#1 cyl has the cam lobes pointing down and #6 cyl has the cam lobes "rocking". Once #1 valve clearance has been set .....according to the video on valve clearance for the M30 I'm supposed to do #5 cyl next going by firing order....so when #5 cyl has the cam lobes pointing down what # cyl would have the valves "rocking" in that case? How much rotation would it take to get there?

I do a checklist with 1-6 I and 1-6 E, then check them off as I do them rather than doing it cylinder by cylinder. One caution, make sure the cam lobes are pointed pretty much down, not just looking like they're not coming into play. The ramp starts earlier than it appears and once I ended up with one valve a bit loose and noisy as I thought the cam was "down" but it wasn't. No harm if it happens, except to perhaps you ego and time.

So it dosn't matter what order you do the clearance on the valves as long as the valve you are checking has the cam lope pointing straight down and you keep track of the ones you've done. Correct? I thought there was some kind of order to do them where there was minimal turning of the crank but I could wrong about that.

Correct.

For the purists maybe. The engine doesn't care. Actually whatever technique you find easiest.
