Steering column

Post by thomas_m535i »

Working on putting my steering column back into the car (see picture).
There are two mounting points for the steering column on both sides at the front (picture 3), but there is also one at the rear (picture 1, circled in green).

Question 1) Unfortunately, I'm not entirely sure about the order of the rear one. There is a plastic guide bush (picture 2, and link 1, #7), and a small spacer tube (link1, #6). As you can see on the 1st picture, there is a small gap of 3mm. Is this normal? Should the plastic guide bush slide/fit in there?
Bottom line: can anyone tell (or show) me in what order this should be put back together?

Question 2) Should the steering column be fitted in a certain position on the spindle (alignment issues)?
Also, do I need to adjust or check the large nut (picture 4) on the steering column when putting it back in? If so, how does one know when it's OK?

Thanks for reading my long post, hope you guys can help me out once again. Many thanks in advance!

UPDATE February 20th, FYI:

in the mean time, I found all necessary bits and pieces and could actually try the steering column on the car. It turned out it was very straight-forward. The plastic washers slot right into the brackets on the pedal box. Also turned out that the rear bracket on the pictures was not meant for mounting the steering column, but should just be bolted together.

The conclusion is that I should take better pictures next time ;-).
