77 530i fuel sending unit wires inside float tube

My fuel sending unit screen was pretty dirty so I decided to do a little cleaning. When I took the screen foot off and removed the tube from the float assembly, I noticed there are three thin wires. there is one wire on each side of the float that is anchored down. However, the third wire is only about two thirds the lenght of the tube and is not anchored down like the wires attached to the float. Should this third wire be a floater or should be anchored down but has broken? I was trying to find a place that just sold the screen foot, but no luck yet. The fuel gage seems to bounce around alot whether the car is in motion or not. Any comments are welcome.
