new winshiled rubber seal question do the "updated"

Post by Merlin »

Hello all;

I was wondering if anyone has used the "NEW" e28 windshield rubber on there cars yet? I need to do both the front and rear on my car. Were you able to use the E12 trim or did you have to down grade to the E28 lock strips?

Thanks
Sam

BMW updated the part to the e28 ones that why realoem shows

Post by Merlin »

BMW updated the part number to that of the e28. that's why it cross references in ETK ie realoem. my concern is has anyone used the new seals and did they work properly. BMW says lots of parts cross but experience has taught me differently.

I did my E28 windscreen last winter and had no problems. Just make sure you use chalk.

The seal works fine. Just use your old metal trim as the new metal trim doesn't fit.

front window, old metal trim

My old metal trim for the front window is completely dark, not chrome anymore. Does anyone know where to get a good looking replacement trim?
Or how to fix this?
This is the trim that is squeezed between the black rubber around the
top and two sides of the front windshield.
I had to get my window replaced, I guess that the new window trim did not fit, the installer installed the old one. Unfortunately it looks pretty bad.
I need to figure out how to fix it. Does that trim come out easily or is this now
a big deal to replace (after it has been already installed)?

Those pieces are known as lockstrips and they're quite easy to replace. Best option is the dealer though they're about $40 ea. The most economical way to replace is to buy two fronts. You shouldn't have to trim the front either. You cut one up for the rear.

Jay, if you mean the plastic, "chrome" piece that goes up the sides and across the top then another option is to paint it in place. I went with a satin black that matched the rubber pretty well.

Well my window installer absolutely hacked and destroyed my front bottom window gasket trying to get the window trim I ordered in. The top gasket that went around the whole window was fine. Now I think I need to reinstall the front window again with a new gasket. Ughhh.

I went through the same thing with my B7 Turbo. First time, the installer destroyed both seals and all of the metal trim. I had it redone in California By someone that had done many of these and the rear was done well but the front was very tough since the lower metal trim doesn't follow the contour of the glass. The curvature is totally wrong so it pushes out on the sides.

I'm going to try to glue the rubber seal where the installer split it, I bought some 3M stuff that apparently people use on rubber belts that split. Then I will reattempt to install a used bottom trim piece, when I find it.
