Dexron II ATF
Dexron II ATF
The owner's manual specifies Dexron II D20 ATF, which is of course long gone. Is it preferable to use Dexron VI currently on the shelf of the Dex/Merc formulation which is supposed to be the equivalent of Dexron III? I understand there are viscosity differences, but that may not matter as much as the anticorrosive additives.

Re: Dexron II ATF
Your signature says 5-speed, so I assume you're just talking about power steering. I'm just running the current Dex/Merc as you mentioned for P/S fluid with no problems.

Correct, Robert, for the PS. Thanks for the message on Dex/Merc. I found some other boards where E28 guys were running either Dexron VI or Dex/Merc with no problems, so I grabbed some Dexron VI at a local shop and topped off the reservoir. I'll report back if anything melts, burns, squeals or smells bad. The fluid level was pretty low so I'm enjoying the improvement, especially at slow speeds.

I use DexIII but that's because I have about 10 bottles of the stuff some former housemates left behind from their unreliable cars so I slowly go through it. Don't forget there's a filter down the bottom of the P/S reservoir which is only a couple of bucks for a new one. I ran a flush of Seafoam trans tune through it, plus put a magnet from a magnefine filter in there (mostly because it was just laying around though).
