Euro bumper rubber trim to bumper "fasteners"?

Post by canada karl »

The metal fasteners have rotted out. They are basically a small square metal plate with a screw...plate slides into slot in the rubber trim and the screw and nut holds it there. Anyone replaced these? Know of a good substitute method or locally available similar screw. Wallesand&Necht have them but way too expensive.

These things . part no . 51111860064 . Are $3.50 on Pelicans and ECS website. I would try your local BMW dealer. My dealer can usually get Euro parts if they are available.

Karl,

I believe that’s the end screw which is molded to the rubber trim and is not designed for replacement. The rest of the attachment points are clips which do slide in the molding channel. The good news is that the complete trim piece is available but the bad news is, well, if you thought the screw was expensive....

They're 6MM screws right? Got a grinder and a bucket of water? Have at it, I've done worse. :D Or weld/braze/silver solder a flange on a stud. Even if you do have a 100 point car and are showing it, nobody's going to look underneath to verify the head of the fastener.

Heres a pic of my newly rechromed rear euro bumper . It has two holes/attachment points. The top hole lines up with the molded in stud in the rubber trim piece. The lower hole with the floating bolt lines up to part no 51111860064.

This pic shows my old crappy rubber trim, red arrow is the molded in stud( mines rusted away), Green arrow is the remains of part no 51111860064. Yellow arrow is where part no 51111860064 is inserted and slid along to green arrow. When I bought these bumpers I figured it was great because they came with the rubber trim but they are is such crappy shape I'm going to have to buy new from the dealer. Add the cost of rechromeing which I wasn't really planning and I'm way over the cost of just buying everything new. Live and learn. the rest of the trim is held by the clips. This applies to the top rear bumper rubber trim strip. The lower trim strip just has the molded in stud so part no 51111860064 not needed. Front bumpers I'm not sure

Thanks for the visual. Years ago I lucked out and found a set of Euro bumper from a 525 at the wrecker for next to nothing. I had to remove the rear bumper recently to repair some fender damage. It's a little tricky mounting the fender to body body mounts at the back of a 76 530i.

Karl, Yeah I haven't even removed the NA bumper yet so I still have that and the cutting off of the NA bumper bracket to do. Just working myself mentally up to the purchase of the new rubber. Great luck finding euro bumpers at a yard, I've picked parts from a bunch of e12 in yards but never a euro.
