Has anyone made a non-AC center console from an AC console?

I'm about to attempt this amazing feat of anti-luxury 8) and was just wondering if anyone else has done it. If not, I'll photo-document it and post the process up on the board. If anyone has done it, are there any hazards/suprises along the way? Please share.

I'm also not sure if it would be easier to start from scratch or to just take off the plastic blower covers from the original side pieces and graft in new wood. All opinions are welcome!

Thanks,
Adam

I love to do it the other way around but AC isn't very common here so it's hard to come by. So I'd like to see your pics!

I would take the whole thing out and make a pattern, then cover it. That's me.

Cool. I took the vinyl off of one side. It doesn't look too hard to make if you have access to a table saw and a scroll saw. The sides are just 1/2in birch plywood. Then I just need to make a floor (I'm going to use 1/4in birch plywood for that) and redrill some of the holes. I'll try to have a write-up w/ pics in the next few days. Looks like the total cost will be ~$40. Not too bad.
