3rd brake light
3rd brake light
Has anyone installed a 3rd brake light in their e12? What did you use?
Re: 3rd brake light
I did on my last one. I just connected it to the brake light circuit. I used an E28 3rd brake light. (actually probably an E28 package shelf with the brake light back when they were still common in the DIY yards)

sure.
here`s a link: https://classicshop.pl/en/produkt/lampa ... 8404204e3d
I didn`t use this dealer but it has better pics.
I`m in the Netherlands so not sure if you can get it in the states. It says Made in India, so you may have to be a wealthy man to afford one nowadays...
Just stick it to the rear windshield , wire to the trunk and done. You can also tilt the internals to the correct angle for the glass.

Re: 3rd brake light
Update- PICTURE shows an LED Hella light, actual item is NOT LED...
Original post - no longer accurate.
Yes, I recognize that! It is one of three "Hella LED MATRIX" versions with adjustable aim to allow directing the beam at drivers behind you. The adjustment accommodates the different angles of the rear window. I have sold LOTS of these -- the '5238' model, the middle of three versions (for 37 to 56 degree windows). This fits most BMW sedans, 2002 and 5 series included.
The one in this ad looks like it's for the 'VW bus' and similar vehicles with near-vertical back windows...the 57-80 degree model. I really hope it will allow you to point the output beam high enough for it to be effective... you MAY be able to adapt it to your E12, and I wish you luck.
What number is printed at the top right corner on the back of the package? I think it is model 5239. The wiring is different that the ones I have, but that's not an issue. The range of angles it will point IS the issue. If it points at the trunk lid or the ground, it may not do what you want it to... but it could probably be modified by a clever person.
Here's the model 5238 label... is this the one?
