E12 exhaust heat shield

Post by Blaise »

My 1977 530i came with a heat shield between the driveshaft and the body, but not between the driveshaft and the exhaust system.

My 1980 528i did come with this heat shield, as seen below. This is a photo from the car of one of our dear members (I hope he does not mind my posting it). Obviously, his car is immaculate.

<table><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/I ... site"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-y0nX ... rside.jpeg" height="640" width="480"></a></td></tr><tr><td>From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/1030509870 ... bsite">E12 underside</a></td></tr></table>

I did save this heat shield from my 1980 car and it seems to be a good idea to shield the catalytic converter (and exhaust) from the rest of the vehicle.

The problem is that my 1977 did not come with any of the mounting studs. I would prefer not to drill into the underside of my rust free car, just to hold a heat shield. Any ideas?

I was thinking of cutting the shield to become a bit more narrow and fit the studs that hold the first shield.
