I've been researching what I'm going to need for a 5 speed conversion and was wondering if this would be a direct fit into an 81 E12 528i

I'm pretty sure it is since it's coming out of a 633, just wanted to confirm!
Great site here btw, gotta post up some pics of my baby soon

This getrag will fit your car, but you won’t be able to connect speedo cable on it.
I have the same one I give you for $100 plus shipping

I thought that the 1981 528i did come with a 5 speed....unless yours is automatic
If you are converting from an automatic....there is a little more to it than the FAQ mentions.

thanks for the responses!
yes, i am converting from an automatic. I'll keep searching through the archives of this forum to collect more info on what is involved, and maybe it would be wise to invest in a service manual?

A service manual is certainly nice to have.
I can help you with the conversion, as I just did it. It is not a huge deal, just some more parts needed than is listed on the FAQ.
Start a list and we can add to it for you.
