Is it possible to properly remove/install carpet without removing the heater fan assembly in the center console? Seems like it would be sooo much easier if that could be avoided.

Carpet removal/install
Alright, I figured out that the answer hinges on the definition of proper. It is certainly very possible to do it by making an incision in the carpet between the firewall and the blower. It comes out easily then and you could install the carpet in a way that no one would ever know that incision had been made.
