m535i brakes

Post by ArtJohnson »

So the garage queen m535i front brake calipers have some pistons that are sticking, and corroded enough that the local expertise says they aren't worth building (I am not so sure). I have hunted around on this forum and on RealOEM, and haven't found any simple alternatives aside from the $900 factory set, if they are available. I do have a set of 16" BBS RA's that would fit over larger calipers, but would like to stay with the stock 14" wheels. Suggestions? Thanks in advance

Yeah, a couple. First is rebuilding them anyway and see what happens. Rebuild kits aren't that expensive or difficult. Without seeing them my guess is they would last in the 10's of thousands of miles rather than hundreds of thousands. Beyond that, I remember some place back east that used to put brass sleeves in master cylinders. My guess is someone does the same thing to calipers and at a fraction of the cost. And something far better just came to mind, IIRC I've heard the calipers are regular calipers with a spacer in them. Get some good standard calipers, dismantle and put said spacer between the halves.

Hows that for options. And Tischer shows them for the bargain price of only about $650 a pair anyway.

Correct, calipers are the same, but with a slightly thicker spacer in the middle for the slightly thicker disc the 535's had (25mm vs 22mm). Certain 735's had the same 25mm thick disk, which helps when sourcing them (but they didn't use the same caliper so don't try that).

Interestingly, Alpinas used the same calipers but with a yet still thicker spacer so they could go to 27mm discs.

Can the spacer be removed from the 535i calipers and installed in 528i calipers?

E12-based 635s have the same calipers. I have a pair of those I'm going to rebuild for my car. If I ever work on that car again.

Anyone have the actual measurements for the two calipers? I probably have both e12 and e24 calipers.
