Early/Late Shocks/Struts

I've got a 1975 E12 and was curious about the front struts. I see that they changed in 1976 to accommodate the later calipers and vented rotors, but I was curious as to how interchangeable components are between the early/late model struts. Are the shocks the same, can the calipers/discs be swapped over. Is it better just to find a later strut and swap the whole thing?
