starting problem: starter or relay ?

Post by CBradio »

Out of nowhere, after a trip, my car just wouldn't start.

I tapped on the starter while my dad was turning it over, and it started.

The next day, the engine began to turn over- but then cut out, same thing, it wouldn't start.

There is a noise coming from the starter when I try to start it-

It doesn't sound like a weak battery noise (which i would say is a "tick tick").
it sounds more like a "tap-tap" than a "tick-tick"... leading me to believe starter is no good.

I am about to order a starter, but in my parts search I came across the "Starter motor relay" 61319059177

Where is this relay? Could this be responsible?

I'm 99% sure its the starter, but wanted to post here before I order.

Any insight always appreciated. In any event I'll post when its fixed.

I changed the starter, that was the problem!

FYI the job wasnt that hard, BUT at least one of the two bolts holding the starter is a real pain to remove- I needed to use an open ended wrench little by little. A SLIM ratcheting wrench would have done the job, but the one I had was not slim enough.
