...providing the motor still had good compression I was wondering if the motor would fit nicely into an E12 in terms of motor and trans mounts etc. I realize it would be a big project but what a way to liven up the old 76 530i. The body is banged up from it's racing days.

Such things as dreams are made of,... " Fit nicely," will be your call. If you read my recent posts on repairing supposedly simple items like the windscreen wipers, your mind set going in pretty much has to be on patience and doing whatever it takes until the job is done.

What engine is it? A ///M out of an M5 or M6? It should fit then but the motor mount bolts might not be in the right place. When I put an '80 engine in my E28 I had to fab new motor mount brackets, it had holes in different places. Took me longer than I thought it would, mostly in design which was overkill, but I put 155K on it before I sold it and never had an issue so I did something right. Tranny should be ok although you'd need an extra bracket to support the rear of the shifter. I would say make sure it's complete more than in good shape, especially if it's a factory race engine there might be unobtainium parts on it on the intake side with 6 butterflys.
