heater control lights

Post by ArtJohnson »

I would like to replace the bulbs that illuminate the heater control dials in a 1980 M535i. Where can I find instructions for disassembling the control unit so I can get to those bulbs? Thanks.

Hi Art, I just pulled the dash apart to replace the expansion valve in the AC evaporator, and iirc the bulbs were readily accessible from behind the controls. Do you have the blue manual? Those instructions for removing the heater/AC controls are what I followed and they were sparse but adequate. The trickiest part is dealing with the universal joints and control shafts that connect to the dials, but it's not a big deal.

Thanks Eric,
As far as the blue shop manual, I don't think have one--it went with a 530i that I sold. There are a couple manuals on ebay (tall $$), and that might be the eventual solution. There is a FAQ on dismantling the dash, and if there isn't an easy way to get at the bulbs from the front, that might be the way to go. Thanks again.
