Quicker starting....

Post by canada karl »

On the first start of the day on my 530i it does not fire up right away but takes till about the third turn of the key. before it fires up. The battery is new and fully charged and the motor is tuned up. The car starts up perfectly after the motor is warmed up. Just wondered if there was something I should look into regarding fuel or electrical components for a better initial start?

I just remembered about the cold start valve ..... was that the "Jules Verne device?"....seems to me I rebuilt one many years ago and it is on my other car.....it might be worth my while to swap that one in?

Well I got that wrong. It's been awhile since I worked on this car. I just read Peter Florence's article on the L-Jet system and now I'm thinking the Coolant temperature sensor in the thermostat may have corrosion on it and that is causing the problem.

It should start pretty quick. When I injected my E3, using 530i parts, it would start, very predictably on the 6th compression cycle, or second revolution. I think my E12 528i was the same.

Don't forget about injectors, they have to be clean and hold fuel pressure. The fuel pump needs to hold pressure too and the check valve in them can fail. CTS isn't a bad idea either, but not the only thing. Now, everything needs to be right, fuel pressure, timing, the AAV, plugs, injectors, which don't leak. Everything.

I'm going to use this car as a winter car. Up here we have a heater element in the block for -30 Celcius temps. It's a little too soon to be plugging it in now but when I did plug it in the other night to test the block heater the car fired up right away in the morning. This leads me to believe that the CTS or cold start valve may be the problem but I do see your point about the other issues that you mentioned.
