I was thinking about ways to move the knob backwards. Other than shortening the linkage, bending is really the only option (there is a bend in the shifter). What might make bending slightly laborious is that the outer aluminum trim turning is potted into place with silicone, but there are clearly set screws holding it to the inner main shifter rod. Using heat would require disassembly I think, but doable.

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. I had the shift lever rotated 180 degrees. I read on the Auto Solutions site somewhere they it's easy to get it wrong, and if you do the shift pattern will be forward and toward the right. Luckily, you can fix this without dropping the exhaust or the drive shaft with a little patience. It's nice being able to drive without the bottom of the steering wheel in my gut.
