fuel door spring

Post by dutch »

I can`t figure out how to position the spring of the fuel door on my `76...
Looks like that`s the one piece I didn`t take pics of when I unbolted it from the car and I can`t find it in the blue book or the internet... I would be really helped with a picture , even if there`s just a glimps of the spring visible. `76, so rear filler...
Thanks!

I've R and R'd the assembly before with no issues, but on the side mount, not rear, though it is probably the same design. Not sure how useful it will be, but here's the image from Realoem. #4 is listed as fill in flap and #5 is the spring.

Thanks Mike. That`s the picture from ETK. I have it and it doesn`t help.
The spring on side mount door is a little different, as is the door. I might try drinking a bunch of German beers, then try my luck again...

Unfortunately, the older E12s before the facelift are even rarer here. I've only got side doors on my 77s.

It's a long shot, but try looking through the vehicle index here for the early models. Ulrich went around the world cataloging every E12 variant he could find. He did a photoshoot on mine and he went after some unusual details. Been a while, like 2013, but I think he takes a shot at the fuel cap with the door opened as part of the process.
Again, just an idea.....

actually... that`s a really good idea...

I met Ulrich a couple of times. He documented a couple of my cars in the past. I used to own the oldest know 520 automatic. Vin nr. 450... I looked up my own pics of that car and there was a picture with the tankdoor open. I could see the spring but the position did not make any sense and then I vaguely remembered that door didn`t close like it was supposed to...

I`l dive into that register! Thanks for the tip. :!:

yes, loads of pics and clear how the spring is attached to one side, but there`s no way I can get it to hold any position on my car. I suspect my spring is either not correct or not complete or damaged... I did find a spring with partnr. online and real oem says it should be correct for both series 1 and 2 ,as well as a whole bunch of others up to 2006 or so... Not sure if that is accurate but I think I`ll get me one of those and try. Mine has roughly the same shape, but half of it... :?:

wow. never thought such a simple part would give me a headache.
