Cold start up problems '78 530i

it seems like a sensor may be wacko or something to me.
when the engine is cold it will take many many cranks of the starter before it starts up, after that i have to keep me foot on the gas to keep it going.
When warm has no problems driving or starting again.
Ive rigged a switch to the cold start injector. the injector works and i flip it on now to warm up.
I cant find if there is a relay/ or locations of the temp sensors in any books ive got. If anyone knows of sensors/ relay, im all ears.
Also it has the california smog emissions system on it, and i was wondering how to remove it correctly without bypassing anything necessary to the engine?
any pointers would be good.
