I had to change the starter in our 77 530i a few months ago and found it a challenge but managable. You'll need an 17mm obstruction wrench to get the top bolt off.
Peter's right....get intake runner 6 and even 5 off to clear up some work space. I had the coolant resevior hose off at the time too since I was changing out all the hoses. Just be sure to put a rag or something over the inlet for the reservior to keep anthing from falling in.
