Alternate access to trunk?

Saturday was a sad day. Was rear-ended pretty hard while driving in my e12. I have a strong feeling insurance is going to declare a total loss.

Anyway, I have a few things in the trunk I'd love to retrieve. I cannot open it through the button on back to get it to release. Is there another way to ...

Low voltage at ignition coil

Still having issues starting after a long sit and outside temperature change. When the day warms the car has a much higher chance of firing. Once it goes, it will go every time after that. I've replaced the distributor cap and rotor, ignition coil, and ignition control module. No change. Fuel flow ...

Finally got it started this morning. While it was running I tested the questioned switch, nothing happened. Drove it around for a bit, and then when I returned I shut the car off, turned the switch, then started it again. It started fine.

So, not a kill switch. Must just be the alarm switch and ...

Do you mean what is, was it when it was new, purchased and installed by some third party as a good idea 35 years ago ? Because, in thirty years of following the articles, photos, versions of factory stock e12's, I've never seen such a thing.

Of course, that doesn't mean it's not a very esoteric ...

Thanks. I got it started when I got home from work yesterday. Started like nothing happened. Then this morning it decided to not start again. This time I did smell fuel and I checked the fuel pump and it's working. Looking like ignition. Not getting spark.

No start today

For the past few weeks my 528i has occasionally not started on the first try. Usually a cold start. Then always goes on the second. Well, that is until this AM. Nothing at all. Where should I start looking for the cause?

Engine turns over easily but did not catch. Main Fuel pump is less than a ...

Was referring to the duck gasket/cam shaft cover on the back of the head facing the firewall. Have no intention of pulling the head to replace the head gasket. My duck gasket/cam shaft cover appears to be leaking a bit, but nothing crazy.

Out of curiosity, is it really that hard to change this gasket? Do you have to remove the head to do it? Are the bolts too long to be able to exit with the head still attached? Mine is leaking a bit. Fortunately 85% of the leak appears to be from the oil pressure switch and changing that helped ...

So upon further inspection and research, I think my fan clutch may indeed be shot. What's involved in converting to the newer style? Is it as simple as a new water pump and fan clutch?

There is something else, you need a different water pump pulley. Bolt on has a square bolt pattern, screw on has ...

To pull the radiator gives you some room to work, of course, but it may mean new hoses & anti-freeze. Which isn't a bad idea.
If you don't want to take it out, I strongly suggest taping a good size
gift box size cardboard to the radiator to protect your knuckles and the radiator fins ...

Thank you. It appears I've got the 13mm nut on the front of the fan, guessing that means it's the bolt-on type. Any tricks to changing removing the fan clutch to change the water pump?

Which fan clutch/water pump

Is there a way to tell which fan clutch and water pump I've got in mine without pulling the old ones out? Everywhere list two types: 1) fan clutch bolted to water pump or 2) spin-on type. Not sure which one to order when trying to replace water pump. Fan clutch is in good condition.

Thanks guys. I figured it was a coolant line but wanted to be sure. I had some extra silicone vacuum line that I could have used had it been a vacuum line.

It appears all of my vacuum lines are tight and good. Sprayed all of them and got no change in idle. Trying to figure out why it idles high ...
