Re: Steering lock kill switch?
Thanks Mike, this is very helpful. I've always had to push the key while turning to start the car. A few weeks ago it just stopped engaging the starter. I have juice in the accessory and start positions and can bump start the car. It's always been on my "to do" list but looks like now's th...

Re: Steering lock kill switch?
If the switch has failed, will the car still start with a remote starter or bump starting?

Re: When a brake vacuum booster fails?
When I replaced the master cylinder on my 79, there was about an ounce of watery oil in the canister. My theory was that the canister held vacuum after the car was shut off and pulled oil fumes through a faulty check valve which, over time, accumulated as watery oil. But my brakes worked as intended...

Re: When a brake vacuum booster fails?
If the brake pedal needs more travel to engage the brakes, you have a leak somewhere. If you have to push hard for the same results then it's vacuum, master cylinder or caliper related. From your description, it sounds like some component randomly failed. Is the fluid level down? I'd start by checki...

Re: Electronic speedo
Using the Speedhut converter eliminates the cable drive from the gearbox. The GPS unit feeds directly to the speedometer drive using the supplied cable.

Re: Electronic speedo
Thanks and that's pretty neat you have cruise. I overlooked your swap so now it makes sense. Speedhut sells a converter that can use what they call a hot start wire which apparently saves the satellite positioning allowing for faster start up. https://speedhut.com/accessories/sensors/speed-sensors/s...

Re: Electronic speedo
Interesting. Did you do this just to add cruise, or...? I'm considering using mechanical to gps for more accurate speed readings.

Re: Pully or damper noise?
I've listened to it a bunch of times and it sure sounds bearing related. Have you tried taking the belts off of each accessory one by one? I'd start with power steering, then ac, then alternator/water pump.

Re: Pully or damper noise?
Intriguing. Does it go away at higher rpm? Or does the pitch increase?

Re: Pully or damper noise?
Sure sounds like the alternator or water pump, possibly worn belts or pulleys. Have you tried isolating the sound by listening with a stethoscope or screwdriver?

Re: Shifter overhaul?
Yes, I had it done last year, turned out great. I've driven about 2k miles and no problems. Not a Miata-like short throw but definitely lessens the travel vs. the original. Dropping the exhaust will help for sure.

Re: Shifter overhaul?
Hi Hobbes, Congrats on the new-to-you e12 and welcome to firstfives! It sounds like what you're experiencing is a worn 2nd gear syncro. It's not uncommon and not the end of the world unless it gets very, very worn. I think you would experience sloppy shifting in all gears if there were considerable ...

Re: AC ideas and suggestions
Thanks for all the suggestions. I now have about 5 lbs. of R12 so I’m committed on that. I also decided on adding dynamat or similar insulation. I did that in my 78 f150 which made a noticeable difference.

AC ideas and suggestions
Hello! I plan to refurbish the AC on my 79 528 this winter. It has the original motor and a manual transmission. My goal is to have the system work as well as possible in the factory spec. I don't expect it to make the car ice cold in 110 degree weather and don't want to completely re-engineer the s...

Re: hazard light switch
Gary,
I’m not 100% sure, but cosmetically I believe new ones use the international triangle symbol for hazard and originals say “Hazard” like in your picture. I believe they’re functionally the same.
