windscreen install - FAQ needed

Post by garyinwestoz »

I reckon an FAQ for windscreen install needs to be made up.

From what I can gather on various forums, the know how do it on our cars is disappearing, due to modern glass being bonded in.

I found this series of youtube video of a 2002 windscreen install that maybe helpful. I've added a written description which follows this series

Vintage at the Vineyards 2008 - Windshield install demo part , 1, 2 + 3

note * denotes extra steps added by this (firstfives) group

1. Install rubber gasket

Place glass outside down on a firm non scratching surface - maybe a rug or something - bonnet works well too.
orientate rubber gasket correctly,

then
install rubber strip to perimeter of glass, ensuring glass is fully embedded into channel. Start at lower corner and move towards top corner then across the top. Tap around edge with hands, to ensure full embedment

Take a long length of rope or cord ( probably 6mm cotton rope x 6 metres), and insert middle of length rope into bottom corner of channel in top face of gasket. Slowly work rope into channel along the edge and bottom ensuting full embedment, work aroudn corners adn acroos the top and other side.
Cross over robe along the top ensuring full embedment and min 600mm over lap - leaving about 1000 mm of length at each end.
spray rubber gasket and rope with some lubricant ( widnex?)

2. Fit glass to car body

Pick up glass and place over car frame, locating the bottom over the flange and checking its centred over the frame.

Working from inside, slowly pull an end of the rope, peeling the gasket to flip over the metal flange. Have someone on the outside provide a little pressure to ensure gasket and glass stays in place.
Work up one side to the top corner
Then take the other end of rope and work along the opposite direction, across the bottom then up the side
check gasket is fitted nicely along bottom and top
slowly peel ends of rope across the top
double check fitment, use a plastic edge panel tool, to pullout rubber gasket - push in roof lining as required to full perimeter.

then

* insert a good amount of windscreen sealant ( no hardening kind) to the channels ( ie body side and glass side) as an added waterproofing precaution.

3. Fit infill strip

Insert bottom infill chrome strip along bottom channel .... how...??? and corner eschucheon plates.

using special tool https://www.gettoolsdirect.com.au/lisle ... gJAsvD_BwE

Starting at corner adjacent to corner eschuteon plate insert chrome strip with tool already in channel, fully lubricant rubber channel to aid slipping of tool.
* ie cream waterless hand cleaner so can easily hose after wards, without leaving a messy residue.

Work slowly up sides and then across the corner then along the top and down the other side. Keep free end orientated flat so infill strip doesn't twist. A fair amount of force maybe required to move the tool along th channel.
Stopping the tool may cause a nick in the chrome infill - so be aware!

Cut end of strip to required lenght. If the strip you have is too short ... well I dunno!!

hope this helps

I'll be replacing the gaskets on both the windshield and rear glass. I'll obviously, take pictures as part of my Eleanor rebuild. It's going to be one of my projects in the very near future.

Good, but missing a critical step. You need to inject sealant between at least the body and the rubber, that's what the big blue book says, but I also do it between the glass and the rubber. The original stuff is kind of a non hardening putty. Use 3M 08509. It's gooey and sticky and you'll end up wearing some of it, but it's good stuff, never hardens and works perfect. Some of the hardening ones will seal ok, but look out if you ever have to remove the windshield again, you'll have to cut the rubber out, trying not to cut the paint, then somehow get it off the body before you can reinstall with a new rubber. Not wanting leaks I squeeze enough in there so it starts to ooze out, even more so when I install the lockstrip. Cleans up ok with paint thinner.

For installing the lockstrip I use cream waterless hand cleaner. Slick as snot but water soluble so it just hoses off.

Mike I can edit the original post - where abouts in the writeup ought this sealant stuff go.
Ive added a * in the first step as my thought.

Im kinda unsure when the goo ought to go in , given the requirement of using a bit of rope to get the channel lips to lock over the metal flange on the chassi opening.

Not my idea, it's something I saw somebody use long ago, but yes, Genius.

You inject it after the windshield is installed, so no complications with the rope.

This will surely save lots of time and effort for future windscreen jobs. We'll check if uncle's new E12 project needs a windshield job to address the learning. We'll just finish installing the set of wheels from 4Wheelonline onto his Silverado before we can take a closer look at the rubber strips.

What I need now is a " How to remove a good windscreen" , cause I cracked our E28 windscreen and have another car I could use as a replacement - but my last attempt lead to a complete cracked windscreen.

ANy thoughts on removal?

How To remove a winscreen

we did that today (on an E28) which has the same configuration.

tools need
plastic card
spray bottle with hot soapy water
small wood or plastic wedges
a 2 person job.

1. remove interior trim - this took about 5 mins
unscrew sun visor and pulloff rubber edge bead along frame

2. remove exterior plastic infill strip - this took about 10-15 mins
starting at lower edge, using a narrow flat tool - say flat screw driver - ply under the end of the strip and raise it enough to get plastic card under. Using - spray soapy water long outer edge, lifting the plastic card enough to get the outer edge out of the rubber lip , just doing one edge allows the opposite edge to be released - generally I worked the outer edge. Slowly work upwards around the top corner then along the top - get about half way then do the otherside in a similar fashion. Plastic strip almost falls out.

3. remove exterior lower chrome strip this took about 5- 10 mins
Ours was quite stuck with plenty of muck at one corner- the chrome corner pieces have to slide to the side then off to get access the main strip. They are quite fragile- so wiggle them off slowly and carefully. For the main strip, lift the bottom edge free finger then slide with plastic card and soapywater under neath , working form end to the centre - again slowly and carefully. top edge just sort of falls out once the bottom edge is free of the rubber lip.

4. release glass from Rubber seal - took about 10-15mins
Ours had a bit of sealant and glass putty, so we first tried to get that out of the groove. We also debated whether we try to release the inner rubber lip from the body or release the glass from the outer lip -- We decided to try the outer lip first ( as my previous attempt from the inside caused my windscreen to crack!

thus using the plastic card, soapy water and small wedges starting at the side near the top, we slipped the plastic card under the lip and pryed it away from the glass, At the same time from inside we gently pushed up glass, to create a slight gap between glass and rubber - enabling a wedge to be pushed in thus keeping the gap.
Then working along the top ,we pryed the rubber top lip, simultaneously pushed up the glass creating gap, small enough to then insert a wedge. All up the top edge used about 6 wedges, and effectively separated the glass from the rubber lip, we then worked down the sides, doing same thing, such the glass pretty much sat on top of the rubber. Then with both of us at each side, we gripped the edge and lift upwards so the glass bottom edge would separate from the rubber seal. Once separated , we rested the glass on top of the rubber - so we could think about where we will put this windscreen.

All up this took maybe 30 minutes

not much of video, im afraid!.
