79 528i starting problem

I developed a starting problem today.
This morning car would not start, no lights, nothing on go position.

This is what I did:

no power in car except for emergency flashers
Battery voltage 12.8v
all fuses look good
Starter did not work, service plug #1 to +12v

While checking starter again, 12.8 v at battery, heard a click like a relay moving

All works now

Any ideas?

Relays sometimes work off & on?

Try running a hot lead to the starter solenoid. If that spins the starter then you know it is in between. Main relay?

I cannot emphasize how critical it is for owners of older cars to obtain and familiarize themselves with the wiring diagram for their cars. Understanding where current needs to go before it reaches your starter will help identify the fault.
