windshield instal question
windshield instal question
so, it`s about time to start planning front and rear glass installation. I`ll probably purchase a new windshield since the original one has a couple bad scratches. New seal for sure...
I need some advice. The dash in the e12 is very close to the glass and by the looks of it one is pulling the seal more up than into the car..
When these cars were kinda new, and the dash material was still kinda flexy, I can see the installation go kinda ok-ish. But now with the front edge of the dash being hard and brittle, I wonder if it would be wise and / or worth the effort to get the dash out of harm`s way? Any wisdom available? thanks

Re: windshield instal question
No, no need to pull the dash. Do be sure to use plenty of sealant as #1 it's spec'd, and #2 replacement windshields aren't quite the same size and shape as the original ones. A lot of people over on Mye28 have had problems with new ones leaking, but that's because they don't fill up the gap and the hollow space with non hardening sealant.
Do not cut out the old one and scratch the paint, that's what leads to rust. Do make sure there is no rust in there prior to installation, and don't just use primer if you clean some up, primer is typically porous, you need a top coat over it.

Re: windshield instal question
I`ll fab some kind of cap for the crispy edge of the dash, to guide the cord.
There is zero rust and fresh paint so that`s all covered.
Check on the sealant....
I`ve got a lead on a nice quality oem windshield. Hope that pans out.
thanks.

Re: windshield instal question
sealant after installation , before trim? Gasket to body and gasket to glass?
Re: windshield instal question
Yes. BMW only spec'd it between the body and the rubber, but I like to do both. Before the lockstrip is installed. Yeah, it turns into a gooey mess as it oozes out especially after the lockstrip is installed, but it cleans up fairly easily with paint thinner and gives you a nice, non leaking installation, even if there is a significant gap at the upper corners between the rubber and the body. Something, judging from posts on Mye28, many shops struggle to do.

Re: windshield instal question
For years, no, decades, there was a 3M product I used. 3M still shows it but it appears to be discontinued by the lack of stock anywhere. But this product seems to be the same, I just used some this weekend working on the door seals on my E39. Even smells the same.

Re: windshield instal question
I might be able to get the 3m on this side of the globe..? do you have a product name / number?
Re: windshield instal question
I just looked up the 3m... 08509, right? seems to be available here.
How much do you think I need? is 1 enough for both front and rear glass?

Re: windshield instal question
That is the right 3M stuff. One tube is plenty for both the front and rear windshields.

Re: windshield instal question
front and rear glass are in. Definately a job you want to do with 3 persons. Thanks for the guidance Mike.
I did a few things different tho.
I added the 3m to the inside of the seal, then wrapped it around the glass. Next I placed all lockstrips before installing the package in the car. Still have to seal rubber to body.
