Electric windows from an E28

Post by DMS »

Hey guys and girls,

I know it's possible to mount E28 doors in an E12 but would it also be possible to just swap the electric windows and power locks into an E12 door?

The doors on my E12 are perfect but very basic without any options. That's not how I want them to be so I'm checking my options. Power windows and locks are very expensive and hardly available here.

Please enlighten me with your knowledge...

A quick check of Realoem suggests at least late E12s and early E28s used the same parts for the windows. And given the level of creativity you have demonstrated on your car overall I suspect you could do it without too many problems regardless if they're the same or not. Power locks are different, but as long as you had the wiring it could be done too.

E28 doors will revert to E12, but not the other way.

To put E28 doors on the E12, you need to remove the exterior B-Pillar trim piece.

Of course, now that I think about it, perhaps the B-pillar trim piece can be future-fitted to E28s. Despite having both, I never carefully inspected the differences in the B-pillar.

I think I'd also use the E28 central locking actuators if they'd respond in the same way. I know the connections are different, but it might be worth trying.

The weird thing is that the E12 doors are stamped with the cut out for the E28 door handle (I much prefer the E12 one).

Tony Chamberlain has a pretty good pictoral on putting E28 doors onto an E12. In fact, some of the gasket bits that they show on the E28 doors could probably be easily fitted to E12 doors, so I might do that in my restoration.

Bringing an old topic back to life. I've bought e28:
-power windows
-central locking
-lock heating
-power mirrors
-heated mirrors
-cruise control

I'll be fitting that all to my E12. Or atleast try to fit it all. Stay tuned to my project topic:
