I found this

..Snip...

"This fantastic engine used the early version of the Bosch Motronic engine management system. Later versions like the US model M6 also incorporated catalytic converters. As the engine management systems continued to evolve, the airflow meter (AFM), the ubiqutious "barn door", was replaced by the less restrictive mass airflow meter (MAF). With proper design and tuning, this improvement can be made on AFM equipped engines resulting in improved driveability and power without affecting emissions performance...."

is it appropriate /possible with our cars

There's always a way, but...

There are a number of E28s with that conversion and people speak well of it. However I think it needs a chip for the ECU to go along with the MAF itself, and #1, L jet doesn't have a removable chip, #2 I dont think one is made for L-jet. I think you would have to convert to Motronic, then get the conversion kit. A lot of work and expense for what I've heard is a nice, but not overwelming gain.

^^^Yes, I also understand Motronic is a pre-requisite for the Miller MAF upgrade. I also hear nothing but positive comments regarding their system.

Sounds intriguing. A tad expensive, that is if you have to buy all that goes with it.
