this morning while waiting at a stop light, my clutch broke ( 77' 528i),
that is the rod that goes from the clutch pedal into the master cylinder sheared of at a narrow part along its length ( near the pedal end).
I'll post a photo once I got it all off.

got towed home.

I've been having clutch problems lately - ie not going into gear, crunching a fair bit ( into reverse) lots of vibration etc,

are these symptoms of an underlying problem

bit of background- march 2008 installed an block & head from a E28 528i, swapped driveshaft with my 525 to see if vibration would go away - no

generally drives except for some vibration and hard clutch

Can't help with your diagnostics, but am interested in learning...

you can drive an E12 without a clutch, as long as you don't have to come to a complete stop too often.

well
I removed the clutch master cylinder and had it welded up and then put it back in.
took say 30 mins to put back in, bleeding clutch took a bit longer - my 8 yr old pushed the pedal till it got too hard then he gave up helping, so I suppose its about 85 % bled..
any way seems to be working okay for now.
here is pic of it broken.
