Rear tail light gaskets are reversed fitting and molded to fit the frames so why does OEM show the same part number for the gasket - left and right ?

Are you referring to the gasket (#2)?
That one goes between the chrome frame and the plastic housing which them creates your tail lamp assembly.
The molded gasket which seals the tail lamp assemblies to the vehicle is no. 5.
At first, I though I got completely hosed at the stealership when I saw the $4 price tag along side the #2 gasket.

Yes
Thanks Eddie. I spaced on the part number. Cost of a set is what I paid for an entire car. E28's design is actually a down to earth price .

The gasket between the tail light assembly and the body is pretty pricey, as I recall -- it's been several years and grey hair doesn't say much for memory.

It was fairly thick foam rubber. I think the wame part number would work for both sides of the car if you just reversed the seal between left and right installations.
