I want to replace the 262 4-speed with a 265 5-speed that I have but can I still use the 4 speed crossmember?

Hoi,

No, but you can still buy a new 5-speed crossmember :)
It's not expensive.

And,...you know the drive shaft is shorter with a five speed. Easiest to compare the parts drawings and part numbers to have the right stuff in the pile when the project begins.

You can... with the help of a sledgehammer and an anvil, but you shouldn't. There are two different types for 265s and they both work fine and not expensive either as already noted. Only caveat is the parts catalogs aren't always right on which mounts fit the later style.

I got myself one last year - can't remember for sure which one though.
I think it was this one : http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?mod ... g=23&fg=10

Maybe I got the last one in stock? :)

I just threw two in the trash as I was cleaning out the shed last weekend. The trash hasn't gone yet, I can dig one out if you need one.

It looks like the early, E12 one may be NLA, but the E28 type is still available and fits. This is the one I have on mine.

Can the same cross-member be used for the M30B35 5-speed 260/6 Getrag gearbox?

It looks like the first E12's use a different one than the second series (from '77 and up)

Yes, I'm using the later style e28 brace with both mounts (#2 below) also.

Never tried it but I don't believe so. I think it's 265 specific. For one thing I believe 265s are the only of the M30 compatible trannys that use 10MM mounting studs on the rubber mounts.

No, I think it's just 4 speeds use one mount and 5 speeds use another.
