Mounting trunk model badge

I recently sourced a NOS trunk badge for my E12. I'd like to plan ahead before removing the old one. The new one has some small pins that seem to hold the numbers to the black backing plate, but they don't look long enough for mounting to the car. I also checked the inside of the trunk lid - it's double wall and wasn't any help. Is this mounted by the pins, 2-sided tape or both? If it's 2-sided tape, does anyone have a recommendation for the tape?
