Hard braking killing the engine?

Post by wjie20 »

Hey guys,

I have finally done a top overhaul, and I have changed the brake servo unit, I think (that was what my mechanic called it).

Now when I press the brake pedal or brake hard. The engine just turns off (dies). I suspect that it is the brake servo but can anyone else advice?

Thank you.

brake servo

maybe a vacuum leak at the brake servo is killing the engine?

Hmm, I will check on that. How do you identify the brake servo? I was told that the right hand drives have two units.

Thanks

Hi Guys, I'm assuming that this black unit here is the brake servo? I was told that there are two? So where is the other one… Mine is a Right Hand Drive by the way.

Never having seen a RHD with the hood up the best I can do is a image from Realoem. Punch in your year and month and see what it says and look for it.

Thanks, funny how I was told by the Australians that there are two units.
Maybe it's not the same

Thanks Mike, I had my chassis number in it. For the image you have included, it says "no parts found matching your car".

The only few that matches my car are the brake master cylinder, expansion tank and this:

I was told that there are two, I looked under the hood, I only see one.

Edit: Is that first pic your car? i've never seen that configuration - what model is it?

RHD cars all have two as far as i know. Here is a picture of my 528, the setup may differ slightly for injected models:

Hi bizz,

Yes it is my car, it's a 1981 525 it is currently in Malaysia. But I am in Melbourne for studies.

Well, by looking at your photo I guess it is different for Australia which has two.

Btw, which part of Australia are you from?

Oh RHD, I can't help you there, but I don't see why there would be two :dunno:

By the way, how do I check if it is the brake servo unit that is killing the engine...?

Disconnect the vacuum hose to it and plug it. If the symptoms go away, it's in the vacuum circuit to the brake booster. It could as simple as the one way valve. You can test it with a vacuum pump, or if you don't have one, you can use your lungs. You should be able to suck one way, and not the other. And I did not mean it in any way that the way it as intended: Testing the one-way valve,
