Will the differential from an '81 U.S. five speed 633 csi swap in to a '79 U.S. 528i four speed,...mostly no big deal ? Meaning the ratios close enough for government grocery stores.
Only as a prelude to doing the swap, visual, numbers inspection, bolts in or not. Realoem looks promising, but, " Ended," seems to simplify part number specifics.
The 528i made crunchy noises on the highway, but managed to limp to the barn vs. flatbed. Same when on jack stands. Noise from the differential, not a wheel bearing or axle. I can move the car in/out of the garage, 1st, reverse, gently, no audible noise. I'm guessing input bearing or shaft, or bushing franny.
As I have what I believe to be an LSD, it has hoses and a small horizontal radiator attached, my plan is to musical diffy the 633 to the 528, and the LSD into the 633 resto project.
Hints on making sure the oil cooler version IS an LSD are appreciated.
Differential swapping.
81 E24 would be the same as 79 E12, both sideloader 3.45 diffs. Oil cooler was not standard on LSD cars, from the outside they look the same.

Can I pull the Differential with the oil cooler radiator and hoses attached from under the bench, and check a part number on it or do a rotation test of the axle plates, to know if it's LSD or just a stocker ?
It came from a body shop project car, mix and match 630 euro chassis, 635 engine, with Alpina wheels, front valance, springs, steering wheel and leather seats.
35 years ago I knew nothing about such things, including avoiding cars driven in ten years of salt slush with shiny repaint jobs. I'm not sorry, I'm swapping the good stuff to a rust free '81 633.
For no reason other than the other toys and the oil cooler I thought the differential was probably limited slip. Maybe it ain't.

Differential swapping.
Hold one side axle and spin the input shaft. If you can stop the axle shaft from rotating then it's not an LSD. If the axle shafts rotate in the same direction, LSD, if they rotate in different directions, not LSD.

and now an '80 528i, the 7th and last in the series
1981 528i, no. 6 in a series... only 270 k miles

I put a couple of CV joint bolts in each diff flange, then stick a small crowbar in one to hold it and another crowbar in the other to turn it. An open will turn easily with the driveshaft flange turning, a LSD will be hard to turn.
