AC Fans....were they the same?
From model to model back in the day? In other words would one fit an E12 from an E30 or the like? I'm thinking that for an item like an AC fan BMW might not have changed them right into the 80's or 90's? Anyone have one they are willing to part with?

Aux Fan
Yes the Aux Fan in front of the Rad is the one I need. Send me a pm and tell me how much you want for it. Thx

I think late E12, E24 and E28 inside blowers may have been the same or close. Early E12 and Bav might have been the same, smaller than late ones, but no on E23, E30 etc.
Condenser fan I think early E24 and 28. Look on Realoem on this one.

Aux Fan "Resistor"
I see the Aux Fan has a Resistor. Are they prone to failure and how do you check it to see if it's functioning?

Re: Aux Fan "Resistor"
What fan do you have, 528i's do have that resistor, but not 530s. Regardless, they are somewhat prone to failure, not common, but I've seen a couple. It's how they get a high and low speed. You can test it with a meter or turn the A/C on, it should energize with the compressor. It's used with the low speed switch in the radiator and the A/C compressor, high speed is by the high speed switch in the radiator. But 530s only had a single switch, you're confusing me.canada karl wrote:I see the Aux Fan has a Resistor. Are they prone to failure and how do you check it to see if it's functioning?

Confusion
Sorry about that. I was looking at the Realoem fan picture for the 528. I should explain that I removed the AC from the car. The aux fan is wired to a toggle switch to use when I get stuck in traffic when its 90 degrees out. Hot temps make me nervous as I've replaced one cyl head allready. The Aux fan has stopped working and there is power to the fan but no go.
I should probably pull the rad to access the fan motor and have a better look.

Paging Mike re 528 fan?
If I was to install a 528 fan on my 530 how would I set it up to run on High....and if I only need the high range could I leave off the resistor?

Re: Paging Mike re 528 fan?
The plug on the fan has 3 terminals, ground, high speed which goes straight to the fan motor, and low speed which goes to the resistor, then to the fan motor. For high only you would just use the one that goes straight to the fan motor. No need to remove the resistor, you just wouldn't be using it. And BTW, 528i fans blow more air. Much more air.canada karl wrote:If I was to install a 528 fan on my 530 how would I set it up to run on High....and if I only need the high range could I leave off the resistor?
Doesn't your radiator have a switch or a plug in it for a fan switch? Early Bav's didn't, but I thought all E12s did.

fan switch
Thanks for the info Mike. I don't recall seeing a switch in the rad. I'm currently using a brand new rad that is for an Automatic that I got on Ebay for a cheap price and it dosnt have one.

You might just want to take a close look at it. I've seen them where they had pretty low profile plugs instead of the switches. And if there is you could always put a double switch in and run a two speed fan. Probably not, but taking a look doesn't cost much.
