Advice on replacing window outer weatherstripping

Post by grey528i »

Can someone point me to a resource (or directions) for replacing the outer weatherstrip on the front doors. (it could be in the repair manual or some other place). The weather strip on my car is completely dried up and cracked. I bought a replacement and want to replace it. Thank you in advance for any help.

If the correct page doesn't appear, you'll have to look through the contents. The manual helps determine the way each trim strip is attached, to avoid wrecking things having to pull, lift, etc.

Looks like the strips you intend to replace are the full day, taking things apart kind. While you're in there, clean, lube, adjust,...everything else before you put the interior panel back on kind.

Mind if I ask where you found replacement weatherstripping for sale?

Thank you.

T. Hanson, The manual opens to the table of contents and this is where I was stuck before. Can you point me to the number of the procedure (if that is what it is called? - something like 51 21 .....?) It may be that I just don't recognize what I am looking at? (I figured out from prior projects that if I have the final step, the previous steps are listed in it.)

Peminick, I hope I have the right part - at first look, it seems OK. I found it at Bavarian auto and one side is 51 21 1 864 291. I should have talked with them about it to confirm, but it looked fairly straightforward.

I went through both front doors on a 1977 530i over the last year or so.
A few scattered pictures are here from dealing with NLA or wrong parts from BMW; I think I have more elsewhere.

To get to that brush, you'll be taking off the interior handle, window cranks, door card, etc....Ideally, you should replace all the seals and weatherstrips and lubricate linkages while you're in there. It really makes a big difference in the end for noise reduction.

The humanity.

Look in the contents. Think: Weatherstripping. Probably not under Engine or brakes. Clutch ? Nope. Fuel supply ?

Body ? Body interior ? Then read the little topic sentences, click until you see the (bad) photos of what you want to do.

Or, take the rubber dealies to a body shop and tell them to install them. Trade for money. Very easy.

OK I'll keep looking....I think I am in the right area of the book with 51-21- but just not exactly where I see what I am looking for.
