I guess I paid attention, because I turned the key and it it started and kept running .

Smoke from under the valve cover or perhaps paint off the manifold covers baking, both went away. Bled the radiator, temp is fine.

Silly thing is even quiet, idles great, revs great.. Amazing what one can accomplish by methodically thinking it probably goes on like this.
