I thought I posted this, but, here goes again.
On that e12 with the whorehouse red interior(I love that description), I could use the panel that includes the digital clock. I don't need the clock, but, my fan control is way too hard to turn. The one at P & P works the way it was meant to. It's a bit rusty, but the odometer reads somewhere around 90,000! It's an '80, is the distributer the same as my '81?
Even with the factory manual, I couldn't find the lower screws on the car. Do I need to remove the console? Or maybe the radio? I could, also, use the defroster arms, as my left one broke, somehow. I took off the grill on top, but, that's as far as I could go, w/o any more damage. Can you share your tricks with me? I lost the nylon bearing to the left one to the hole of no return, after removing the circlip, already.
Someone in the L. A. area come get those nice whorehouse red(smile)front seats!
Thanx In Advance,,,,Greg

80 -81 distributors are the same. I have been trying to find out what the difference is from 79.....different part number...GripGreg wrote: but, my fan control is way too hard to turn. The one at P & P works the way it was meant to. It's a bit rusty,

I cannot walk you through the console removal but you will need to pull the radio etc.

HEATER CONTROL PANEL
I might want to sell one that was off a low mileage car but hasn't been rebuilt yet.

Having just done it for my gauge project on my e12, I'll share some insight.
There are screws behind the defrost switch and cig lighter that are hard to reach up in there. They go left and right towards the doors and screw into the sides of the console to pull the sides in tight against the heater and radio areas.
You'll first need to pull the radio, then I think the screws holding the radio area are fairly easy to get out of the console. Then the piece holding the ashtray will come out after you remove those screws I mentioned above behind the defrost and cig lighter. There are also some screws going vertically into the heater control portion from the ashtray section, so pull the ashtray out only and put a screwdriver up through where the ashtray was to access those. Summary: four screws total for ashtray section, two vertical that go into hvac section, two horizontal going into sides of console.
Then finally, the hvac controls are held in by three screws that go into the dashboard (vertically). They are recessed so you don't see them from the passenger area but if you look up under that lip of the dash and top of the hvac control section, you will see them. One far left, far right, and one just off of middle. Once you get those out, the hvac section should fall down and you'll need to remove the control rods that control air distribution and the temp control. A flat screwdriver works well to bend the plastic tabs down to pull the control rods.
Then to completely get the hvac section out, you'll need to disconnect it from the brass piece mounted to the top with the cables the operate the fresh air vents. Two large phillips screws hold the brass piece to the hvac controls area.
You'll also need to pull a bunch of wires that plug into the fan control area (four I believe. I took a picture of the color codes so I could plug them back into the correct fan control spade terminals). Pull the two tiny light bulbs out as well, and the connections to the clock.
I just took this section completely apart as one of my fresh air vent levers was broken off on the end and I needed to remove the clock to get my gauge in. I took apart the fan control assembly in the process and it isn't that bad. Yours probably needs to be cleaned, relubed, and don't lose that little ball that makes it click in each fan position!

Heater Controls
Thanx Adam. I'm glad you just did it so everything is still fresh in your memory bank. This is what I needed; I just printed it out. I hope the e12 is still at the P-A-P! Oops! It's raining a little, oh, well! Notice I said a little? We're spoiled here in So. Cal. Greg

Used it myself this past weekend.
My whole console was very loosely installed by whoever put in the aftermarket radio.
Now it's tight like it should be.
Thanks Adam.
