Early E12 525 - mechanical steering

Post by bizz »

I recently pulled down my parts car - a '76 525, and to my amazement, no power steering! Now I even drove this car home and didn't notice any extra resistance compared to my assisted 528. Crazy huh!?

I am considering using the mechanical steering box, and pulling the power steering out of my 528. Main reason - it needs new hoses & the pump needs overhauling.

Am I being silly, should I keep/repair the power steering, or can anyone provide an endorsement (besides bigger forearms) for the no power steering route?

Cheers

Mechanical steering boxes seem to wear more. You could of course compare them since it's in a running car, just something to think about.
