Side loader output shaft seals

Post by RonDwyer »

Hi,

This seems like a straightforward job to pop in some fresh output seals; drop the shafts, pull the center retaining bolt and off comes the hub. My mechanic friend seems to think it is horribly difficult and requires the gears to be re-shimmed. Might as well do it while the car is in the air I say. Then get it steamed.

Update: I have the half shaft disconnected, there is no center nut holding the output flange as in the RealOEM diagram. I'm guessing this thing just gets pried out? Must have a snap-in retainer inside?

Surprisingly, there is not a searchable post on this issue on the site, am I the first one to ever replace these seals? :D

Update 2: Found the Haynes manual, seems I have the snap ring version and it 'pops' out. Of course I dont have the BMW tool, but using the bolts and a plywood shim, 3.25" notch and some large washers to keep the wood from crunching these pop out exceptionally easy. A pry bar was not doing the trick. Gentle even pressure wins out once again! Hope Marshall at 002 gets me the seals on Monday.

Diff seals

Post by canada karl »

Very timely post. The seal on my 530i is leaking as well. Good to know an improvised tool can be made. Where did you get the seals and how much were they?
