Euro Bumper Installation

Post by JoshInAtlanta »

I have been asking around for a few months but have yet to get any feedback on doing the Euro bumper swap.

I have my brand new bumpers all ready to go, my valance and airdam will be back from the paint guys this weekend.

I'm looking for any info on the swap. I want to go in prepared, and NOT make a mess out of it.

Thanks!

Hi Josh,
I'm lookin for a US front bumper that is in better condition than mine it has a lot of surface pitting. Keep me in mind after the swap for yours if it's nice condition. Jeff

Sure is, but it looks like 'ole Hank' is trying to hijack it, and divert it to Athens.
Somebody needs to come up with a plan, and quick.

Got the back on no problem. I have NO idea how to mount up the front, however. All the US stuff is off the car, but I don't see how the brackets for the Euros even come real close to attaching to the frame rail.

Any hints?

Brackets

Post by Don Daynes »

Had the same problem with mine. Others said the euro brackets bolted right up?? Maybe it has to do with the year. Mine was an '81. I ended up making my own brackets using steel tubing the same diameter as the old bumper shocks. The tubing was welded to a plate that mounted to the bumper. Drill a large hole through the tubing and mount using the same large bolt that attached the old bumper shocks.

I just missed this comment tonight. I finished the rear bumper in a decent amount of time Sunday, just a few hours. We started at 8 pm this evening and worked until 3:15 am getting it done.

I also heard they bolt right up... wish it was that easy. I drilled my own holes and bolted the brackets up.

I'm thrilled... it's like an entirely different car.

I guess now it's time for the "after" pic in the signature?

Maybe. I only sent out a few pics. When I get time to clean up this weekend, I will get some decent shots to distribute. It is just after 4 am here and I can't get real good pictures in the garage.

Yes please! The pics you emailed were such a tease.

Sorry to hear that the front was so difficult. I do recall now that when I did the M535i airdam on mine, there were some brackets that the euro bumper attached to in the frame rails. Sorry, it's been about 4 years so my memory has faded.

I'm curious though, why make your own brackets when you could just get the oem ones from BMW?
