EFI Transplant

Post by decoupe »

My first "outing" on this board so after lurking in the FAQ section.

I have the TB and intake manifold (plus other engine compartment related bits) from a 1981 528i that was sourced from a rusty donor car. The plan is to convert my 73 3.5 CS from twin 38/38 webers to FI over the winter. Most of my questions will be "plumbing" related as I'm using a locally produced digital fuel/ignition management system - http://www.sdsefi.com/.

I want to clean and refurbish the throttle body and am looking for articles or advice as to how far to go with the disassembly. An exploded diagram would help as the Haynes manual doesn't get to far into this. Is there a rebuild kit from BMW?

I have already read (printed a hard copy) of the Dual Carb to L Jet article in the FAQ. Very helpful article with staggering detail on the installation.

Thanks and I'll continue search the thousands of archived articles. Interesting search engine.

There is not much on the throttle body you can't reach for cleaning without taking anything apart. What else would you want to do? I'm about 99% sure more then just a good clean is a waste of time or could even do more harm then good.

Realoem.com for exploded parts views.

Read Peter's throttle body FAQ here. I've taken them all apart, not difficult as long as you pay careful attention to how things go back together: the spring winding, bushings, washers etc.

The little bolts on the bottom can be pretty crunchy, but they and the gasket are available through a dealer or bolt source).

The problem you'll run into is finding new bushings, any little rubber washers. If the shaft isn't too sloppy and the bottom coolant area isn't plugged, I would agree all you need is clean and adjusted properly, which is doable without a complete take down.

Thanks for stopping me before i went to far. I have an exploded view for the early version (3.0 CSi) in my parts book that should be close enough.
