I am seeing 2 different types of distributor rotor available for these cars. The one in my car is a small, standard looking rotor, but on Ebay there is a larger, 5k ohm resistance, rev-limiting rotor in the $35 price range.
I have a 1980 528i Automatic. Should I have the big, resistance rotor or the small, non-resistance one?

It should be a resistor rotor, but not the rev limiting one. Earlier carb and L-jet was not rev limiting, but L-jet with lambda is, it cuts off fuel at ~6400. Whether you really need the rev limiting one even on the early stuff is questionable, but definitely not on a 528i.
